Types of Marble For Kitchen Floor ?

What's The Best Types Of Marble For Your Kitchen Floor?

By Vanessa A. Doctor

Marble flooring is one of the more popular types of flooring tile that people use nowadays in their homes. Although the use of marble as flooring tile dates back to the time of the Greeks and Romans, it is now finding its way back to people's homes, and more specifically, to their kitchens.

What is marble?

Marble is actually the result of the exposure of limestone to high temperature and pressure, causing it to crystallize into the natural material that we now know as marble. It comes in a variety of colors, designs and patterns, as well as shapes and sizes, making it very ideal for use as tiles for flooring, countertop, and other similar applications. However, what makes marble tiles so appealing to be used as flooring tiles is its characteristic of being durable and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. It is a durable material, making it easy for it to resist stains very well. This is probably one of the main reasons why marble is considered to be one of the best materials for flooring.

Marble as kitchen flooring

Although marble can be used for flooring in the kitchen, not all of them offer the same type of quality and effectiveness as with some other types of marble, which is why there are only certain marble types that would be considered as the best ones to be used for such a purpose.

Marble comes in a variety of grades, depending on how durable and resistant it is to breakage, with Grade A marble being the most durable and resistant. If you are going to use marble for your kitchen floor, you must make sure that the grade of the marble that you are getting is of the highest one, especially since you are going to use it in an area where there will be a lot of possible contact with the floor through different mediums, such as the appliances, kitchen utensils, food ingredients, as well as liquid substances. You need to make sure that the type of marble that you are using in the kitchen is durable and resistant enough to handle a few bumps, scrapes and slams, in order to avoid major damage to the marble flooring like cracks and breakage.

It is also wise to use marble types that need the least amount of reinforcement, which means that it will be able to handle stains, as well as breakage, with very minimal support from sealants and protections. This is important if you want your marble flooring to last in the kitchen, especially since the kitchen is the place where a lot of mishaps and accidents occur, and in consistent durations.

One such marble type that offers most of that is the "tumbled" marble. It not only is durable enough to handle breakage, but is also resistant enough that it can handle the possible stains and damage with minimal support, but this does not mean that you can just leave a spill on it. You still need to take care of the marble flooring regardless of its ability to resist stain.

However, these are not the only characteristics that make tumbled marble so appropriate for kitchen flooring. This type of marble is considered as appropriate for an area such as the kitchen due to the fact that tumbled marble has a less slippery finish, thereby reducing the chances of accidents due to slips from happening. "Honed" marble is also less slippery, due to its dull, matter surface. However, this type of marble is more susceptible to stains and abrasions, making it a problem to have in the kitchen.

There are a number of important reasons why a person would want to install marble flooring in their own home. Marble floors are timeless and will never go out of fashion.

What is Marble?

Marble is limestone or dolostone which is metamorphasised under pressure. This is mostly made up of calcite which creates marble. During ancient times marble was particularly important and it was used to make ancient sculptures such as the ones found in Asia, Italy, Spain and Turkey. Marble was used in ancient Greece and roman empires in order to create some of the amazing masterpieces which still exist today.

Marble Flooring Today

Marble can be very expensive, this is because it has to be imported from a country where it is found. It normally comes from China, Spain and Italy. The largest marble producing country is Italy because they produce very high quality marble with some fancy designs.

This has always been seen as quite a lavish and extravagant flooring material. It has always been used by people that wanted to show off their wealth publically. Everybody notices marble, it is quite easy to notice. Marble is normally left uncovered so that people can see it in all its glory.

Beautiful Marble Floor in the Foyer

Marble Floor Foyer

How to Add a Beautiful Marble Floor in the Foyer

By Samuel Turner

A marble floor is elegant while also being a durable easy-care option for the foyer; it provides a beautiful base that suits any style of decor. Marble floors are also easy to install and follows much the same procedure that is used to install ceramic or marble tile. About the only drawback to marble flooring is that it tends to feel cool to the touch, so it may not be a good choice for homes in cold climates. Installing a marble floor in the foyer is an ideal home improvement project that can be completed over a weekend. Here's more info on how to install marble flooring.

Types of Marble Flooring

When shopping for marble tiles, you'll find several varieties to choose from: Polished marble is a traditional product that provides a mirror-like stateliness to your foyer with gleaming surface that holds up relentlessly. Tumbled marble features an elegant sleek finish that is more buffed than shiny; its organic look is produced with a mixture of water, sand and mild acid that is used to gently sand the edges of the marble tile for an elegantly simple look. You will also find marble tile with a brushed finish that offers an old world refinement to a space and it is perfect for adding a touch of antique charm and sophistication.

When it comes to colors of tile, you find white, buff, cream, shades of green and brown as well as black and varying levels and colors of veining to coordinate with your decor. Marble tiles also vary greatly in size so choose a tile size that is in scale with the size of your foyer.

Basic Installation Tips

You can find many DIY step-by-step tutorials online for installing marble tile. Although marble tiles are installed much in the same way as ceramic, keep in mind that marble tiles are heavier so they're a little harder to handle and they require a flat, secure base. Before beginning, make sure that your subfloor is clean and level and then screw cement backer board to the floor to provide a sturdy base for the marble. This step is important to prevent cracked tiles in the future. Lay out your tiles first without applying adhesive in order to create a layout that will require the least amount of cutting.

To install the tile, apply a layer of thin set adhesive directly to the backer board working a small area at a time with a notched trowel. Set the tiles and use spacers to keep your grout lines straight, wiping away excess adhesive as you go.

Mortar is used as grout and a grout mesh may be installed beneath the tile to keep the mortar from cracking. After the mortar dries completely, you should seal the marble to prevent stains, and depending on the amount of foot traffic in your foyer, the sealant should be reapplied every nine to eighteen months.

The color of marble changes as time goes by and it is nearly impossible to replace a damaged tile with one that is a perfect match. However, a marble floor that is correctly installed and maintained will provide years of beautiful service in your home's foyer.

How to Properly Clean Marble Floors

Learn How to Properly Clean Marble Floors

By Sabrina Rocca

How to Clean Marble Floors -- powered by eHow.com

People who have marble floors may well think that since they're made of stone, they won't need very much in the way of maintenance to keep them in tiptop shape. That's only partly true. Even though marble floors are made of far sturdier basic materials than hardwood or wood laminate floors, they still do need some upkeep to keep them looking great.

Firstly, here's a DON'T. DON'T use vinegar or a vinegar-based cleaning solution for cleaning marble floors! Marble is a sort of rock that, even though it is a quite sturdy building material, can easily be damaged by acidic substances - and vinegar is of course a kind of acid that, even though it's on the weaker side, can still do some damage to marble. So you'll want to stay away from using it on your marble floors.

Secondly, here's another DON'T. DON'T use soaps or detergents on your marble floors, even the mildest, least harsh sort. They could also result in damaged floors - the surface could pit or even crack, and you might very well have to replace your flooring as a result!

Thirdly, a DO. DO sweep up or vacuum up any sand or solid dirt that's on your marble floors. People or pets that step on this dirt can drag it all around the floor, and it can end up scratching or causing grooves to form on the surface. These scratches or grooves may be barely visible, but if left untreated, they can lead to your floor cracking or fissuring if water gets in or something impacts it hard.

And another DO. Two recommended fluids that you can use to clean marble floors are commercially available marble cleaners and - surprise - water itself. DO use either or both of these to clean your marble floors. You can try using water and a clean rag or mop first, and then if the floor doesn't end up as clean as you like, you can try using the cleaner. Keep in mind though that it's not advisable to air-dry the floor if it's marble for safety reasons, and because that water can begin to make its way into the pore spaces of the rock and end up damaging it if left for too long. Dry the cleaned area with another rag or towel after you're done cleaning it up.

Next, DO try to hunt down a good sealant and a polisher when you look for a marble cleanser. The sealant will be very useful, as it will prevent dirt, dust, liquids and other such contaminants from penetrating through to the marble in the first place. And the polisher will help ensure that your tiles look brand spanking new.

Lastly, if you are not satisfied with how your marble floors look after you've had at them with all these treatments, you can always ask specialists in cleaning marble floor to clean them and fix them up for you. Or you can look for a third party and have them help you with the floors. Professionals always know best.

Keeping Your Marble Flooring ,a Constant Marvel to all

Keeping Your Marble Flooring a Constant Marvel to All

By Tom Turner

Marble flooring
do justice at every house's finishing. No wonder, many took advantage of the chance to decorate their shelters with such exquisite material. Marbles have neutral colors further highlighting the spaces in your home. They also harmonize with whatever type of furniture, thus creating a rather elegant look in the place you live in. Unfortunately, marbles contain soft surfaces, making them fragile to scratches and other forms of damages. How then can you keep the beauty inside your home? Here are some tips:

o When cleaning, use softer scraps of cloth. Damp cloths soaked with over-the-counter peroxide can do the trick. Always remember how fragile your floorings are.

o Sponges can be your new best friend in scrubbing your marble flooring. Do not, however, be inclined to use the abrasive side of some sponges.

o Vinegar is a definite no-no when it comes to caring for your marbles. Acid can easily soften and deteriorate your marble tiles. With that in mind, hydrochloric acid, or any substance having any form of acid in its content should never be in contact with your floor.

o Considering what we have discussed about marbles, be cautious in moving heavy furniture that has rough support. Dragging them relentlessly would bring nothing but scratches to your marble flooring. In case it is unavoidable, try to carry them instead or insert a thick smooth cloth in its stand while carefully dragging it to one direction.

Cleaning marble flooring is a hard task to do. However, maintaining the beauty and the glossy texture of your flooring is worth of all the effort you use in cleaning it.

Are Carpets and Tiles is in Trend ?

Flooring Options - Are Carpets Or Tiles Right For Your Home?

By Maria Faith

Improving your home does not only involve the need to concentrate on its exterior and interior walls and ceilings. Another important part of this task is to select flooring materials that would best satisfy your needs and preferences. By carefully choosing among the wide variety of flooring options, you would become more satisfied with the outcomes of your important home improvement project.

Until now, carpets and tiles remain as two of the most famous flooring options in the real estate industry. Both of them are significantly cheaper than other existing flooring materials. If you want to choose from these two popular materials, you should read this article. It would share all the information you need in order to assess which of these two materials are best for your home.

Benefits from installing tiles

Tiles would be perfect for you if you or one of your family members have asthma or allergic rhinitis. Unlike carpets, tiles do not accumulate dust or other fine particles that could trigger respiratory problems and illnesses. They are also easier to clean because you could easily see the dirt and stains that are stuck in their surface. All you need to do is to scrub their surface with effective household cleaning products.

Aside from being allergen-free and easy-to-clean, tiles are also flexible flooring materials. With a touch of your creativity, you could easily cut them and arrange them into different artistic patters. You can use combinations of tiles made from marble, slate, or ceramics. With these different materials, you could instantly create your very own masterpiece within a short period of time.

Benefits from carpeted floors

If you want your home to be more comfortable than it already is, you should consider using carpets in your home instead of using ceramic or marble tiles. They could instantly make your home seem cozier and welcoming to your guests, as well as your loved ones.

How could carpets provide this kind of comfort for homeowners? Firstly, this flooring material could easily trap warm air in its surface. Hence, keeping your home warm during the cold winter months would become much easier once you choose carpet as the main flooring material in your home. In addition, a carpeted floor has the capability to absorb excessive sound. You would become less distracted by the sounds of children running around your home, or sounds coming from different rooms inside your house.

If there are old people inside your home, investing on tiles is not an ideal decision that you should make. Slippery tiles could become a big problem because old people could easily lose their balance once they step on wet and slippery flooring materials. You should take advantage of the slip-resistant properties of carpeted floors if you do not want these kinds of accidents to happen.

Combining carpets and tiles

If you are still undecided about the flooring material that you should use for your home, you could always experiment by combining carpets and tiles in your home. You could place your luxurious carpets in your living room, bedroom, or other areas where comfort is mostly needed. Meanwhile, areas that are prone to spills and being wet should be tiled instead of carpeted.

You should consider all of these things while choosing between tiles or carpets for your home. By remembering these tips, you could easily come up with a decision that you would never regret.

Verrado Luxury Property and Verrado New Homes can offer you a whole deal of information about the real estate market. Whether you want to sell your house, buy a property or rent one, getting all the information that you need will give you a great advantage.

Marble Flooring - A Fascinated Choice !

Marble Flooring - An Elegant Marble Flooring - An Elegant Choice

By John Giles

All natural stone floors exhibit different style and characteristics. However, all of them are beautiful and elegant in their own ways. Travertine is very common and offers minimalistic designs, limestone is the choice for property developers, slate is the choice for people who are looking for rustic look and distinctive colours. The list goes on with granite, quartz, basalt etc.

Marble is one of the most durable materials of all natural stone products. It can be used in commercial applications and high trafficked areas without any problems. As people are getting to know more about marble, it is worth mentioning below the most common marble floor tiles that are commercially available:

1) Crema Marfil Marble: The world renowned Spanish marble is commonly known as Crème Marble. Depending on the selection, Crema Marfil marble tiles can either have very limited veining or variation (which is very expensive) or have distinctive veining going through the tile (which is more cost effective). Property developers or DIY enthusiasts mainly prefer this marble as they are beautiful in colour and available in bigger sizes for large areas. Also they come in honed or glossy finishes.

2) Nero Marquina Marble: Originated from Italy, these marble tiles have black background colour with very stylish white veining within the tile. The source material is scarce and also very fragile which results in high consumer price. This is the choice of professionals and the ones with no budget constraints.

3) Carrara White Marble: Carrara is a city in Italy and this stone originates from Carrara region. Normally the tile has very pure white background colour with limited veining. One important rule in natural stone is that if the tile exhibits limited variation, the consumer price must be very high. Therefore, budget options of this stone are also available with blackish and greyish veining. Some designers use this product with Nero Marquina marble to create checkerboards.

4) Bluestone Marble: Originates from Turkey, this marble tile has dark blue colour with different shades. Also the edges are tumbled for a rustic look. It can be used with a white tumbled marble (mainly Carrara marble or similar) to create a checkerboard effect.

There are many other types of marble tiles available in the market. The important message here is that marble comes with different colour choices; black, white, brown, cream, blue, grey. Contrast colours give limitless ideas to design professionals. Even 10mm thick marble tiles are more durable compared to other types of natural or man made flooring. Therefore if you decide to choose marble flooring, we guarantee that you will not be disappointed.

Flooring Styles and Ideas !

Flooring Ideas For Studio Living

Lofts tend to feature hard finishes - exposed brick, concrete and timber floors - which increase sound levels, but these can be muted by adding rugs and other resilient materials. Under-floor heating, which is enjoying a revival, is compatible with most types of flooring styles, but is particularly efficient with ceramic, stone and well-seasoned hardwood.

Textured rubber flooring is available in sheet format or tiles, natural or synthetic (or a blend of the two). Rubber flooring is extremely hardwearing and is available in an extensive range of shaped tiles and decorative patterns for modern designed living. This type of flooring is also easy to clean and offers a non-slip quality that is ideal for bathrooms and kitchens alike. The only downfall of using textured rubber flooring is that it shows up scratches very easily, but not too worry over time these tend to fade away unless the scratches are deep and heavy.

Textured vinyl has similar characteristics to textured rubber in that it is easily maintained. Sheet vinyl or PVC as it is also known is also very tough, waterproof and also has the same non-slip action as textured rubber flooring. It also comes in a large range of colours and textures to suit any application. Downfalls to using this type of flooring; it may be marked by furniture without castors (wheels) and can be stained by shoe polish and fibre pens. Vinyl tiles share all the same advantages and disadvantages as sheet vinyl except for the fact, as the name suggests comes in a tile format.

Wood has its own charm, but a soft paint wash can brighten up weathered boards or mask poor-quality timber. Wooden flooring planks are available in a large variety of thickness', widths and lengths to suit all applications. Wooden flooring can be left natural or a tint may be applied to give that extra bit of personal touch. To increase the durability of wood flooring it must be treated with the correct types of varnish. Outdoor flooring in the form of wooden decks and porches require outdoor varnish to be applied. Indoor flooring on the other hand requires indoor varnish. Wooden flooring is highly compatible with under-floor heating but does tend to amplify sound levels. Due to the high costs of certain woods, a wood laminate is your next best choice. Made from pressed, resin-impregnated papers, laminates offer an immense variety of colours, patterns and textures that resemble natural wooden flooring planks. They are more durable than natural wood planks and less easily stained, however, they are much harder and tend not to have the same soft 'walk' as natural timber does.

Assessing your flooring needs before you start renovating is extremely important. This will ensure you make the right choice for the desired area. For example, if you are planning neutral-coloured walls to create a feeling of space, a natural-coloured floor will help to add warmth. Does the luxury of walking on carpet appeal to you? If so, have you considered how much cleaning and maintenance it requires and whether it is practical in the chosen area. When in doubt, even if a light coloured flooring is chosen, always go for the textured version to hide scuff-marks and scratches.
