Thinking Colours
When you start thinking about the colour options that you want to include in your room and on your rug, you should start looking around at the colours that you already have in your room. First look at the walls, floor, carpet, sofa etc. Are they bold colours or more of a pastel scheme? If you've got pastel shades or something very neutral and light, you can get away with having very bold pattern on your rug. If you have a dramatically coloured wall, however, then you may want to stick with more neutral tones for your rug. There have been situations, however, in which bright, bold rugs go very well with boldly coloured walls. It all depends on what colours you have and what you're trying to accomplish with your room.
One thing that you may want to do is look around your room to see if one colour seems to pop out at you. Many times people find that there is one specific colour that they have more of in a room than they thought. For instance you may have red pillows and a red lamp. If that is the case, you may want to go with a rug that has a lot of red in it. Or maybe you've got a lot of green accents. That's when a green rug would be great.
Patterns
If you're going with a solid coloured rug, your job may be fairly easy. If you want a patterned rug, however, and you already have a lot of different colours in your room, you may have much more of a challenge. If you're going with patterned rugs, make sure that you select a pattern that is calm and much less ornate if you have a great deal of colours and patterns already going on in your room. If, however, you have a very plain room, you can get away with adding some wild patterns and designs in your rug.
If you can, take pictures of the rugs that you're looking at adding to your home and print them out on a regularly sized piece of paper. Then put one or two sheets of these papers in the place where you plan on having the rug to see how the colours go with your existing décor. This will help you to make sure that you get the right colour rug the first time.
Style
Style and type of rug will make a big difference in your choice, sometimes a mix of modern contemporary furniture can look fantastic with a more traditional Indian wool rug and viser versa, an oldy worldy style of room can look great with a modern shaggy rug. You have to have a bit of vision. Look at homes magazines for inspiration, I always find I get my best ideas from other people.
